The morning sun path and tree shade from a number of neighbours’ back gardens provided inspiration for a glassy kitchen/dining room addition to this family house in south London.

The new kitchen and dining room was designed as a single garden room for the house. Key to the project’s context was the orientation of the building’s side-return towards the morning sun and some fortuitously positioned deciduous, mature trees. The trees were already providing invaluable shade in summer, but the original building was barely admitting any of the productive winter sun when the leaves had fallen.

The proposals seem to find the feeling of space, by continuing the glased external wall down the side of the extension. Strips of American Cherry used as an interior wall covering, conceal a secret Laundry/Utility room and under-stairs WC.
